Currency Hong Kong

The currency of Hong Kong is the Hong Kong Dollar, with one Dollar equalling 100 cents. Notes come in denominations of HK$1000, 500, 100, 50, 20 and 10. Coins are in denominations of HK$10, 5, 2 and 1, and 50, 20 and 10 cents.

Currency is easy to exchange in most hotels, banks and bureau de changes. Traveller’s cheques are accepted widely, though it is advisable to take them in US Dollars, Euros or Pounds Sterling to avoid additional conversion charges.

ATMs are widely available, and major international credit and debit cards are accepted.

Business

General banking hours in most areas are from 0900 to 1630 Mondays to Fridays, and from 0900 to 1230 on Saturdays. Shopping hours vary a great deal from area to area, but are generally from 1000 to 2100 all week long.

Usual customs should be observed when in Hong Kong, and general politeness is to be expected. Formal wear is expected of business encounters, and a handshake is the normal greeting.

Whilst service charges are usually added to most hotel and restaurant bills, an extra tip of around five percent is expected. Taxi drivers, bellboys etc. expect a tip.
